What went wrong on beta launch night, according to a producer

· Beta

A Senior Game Producer explained the beta's first-night login drops, slow loot and server strain.

  • Tom Ellis said the beta uses the PTR environment stack, not a Production stack.
  • Logins: after the queue, which he called Battle.net rate-limiting logins, players were disconnected.
  • One REGIONAL realm had two connections, which the BGS metering system read as overload despite idle CPU and memory. They scaled to eight.
  • Slow loot and quest accepts: PTR database queries were slow until engineers ran a manual analyze (DBMS_STATS) on all tables, now repeated.
  • Server strain: empty maps were not shutting down, so the WORLD pools ran hot and the OOM killer hit the first VMs.
  • A fix that had passed QA needed restarts, and they added more WORLDs. He said the first hours after that were smooth.

Unconfirmed the current state of the beta servers; this describes one night, not the launch setup.
