Transmog rules & slots

Updated 23 Sep 2026

Everything public about transmog in Forever: how to turn it off, what you can wear over what, and who gets the look.

The rules

  • Transmog is on, and you can turn it off

Talk to a transmogrifier NPC to opt out. With it off, you see every player in the gear they have equipped. You can still collect looks and set your own outfit. Classic Mode starts with it off.

  • Your silhouette stays

A look has to match the item under it: cloth over cloth, plate over plate. A Paladin wearing a cloth chest needs a cloth chest appearance for that slot.

  • Several looks per slot

Save more than one appearance per slot in each set. Loot an upgrade and the look you already picked stays.

  • One collection across rulesets

Appearances are shared across Normal, PvP and RP. Hardcore arrives later as a closed ruleset: what you earn there flows out, nothing flows in.

  • Level limits lift at 60

Low-level characters cannot show higher-level appearances. The limit lifts at 60. Cosmetic items are exempt.

  • Hidden helm and cloak always work

Hiding your helm or cloak shows for everyone, including players who turned transmog off.

  • No need to keep the item

Once a look is in your collection you can use it without holding the item.

Armor slots and types

A look must match the armor type of the item in that slot.

  • Shoulder
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Legs
  • Feet
  • Back
  • Wrist

Who gets the appearance

When a look is added to your collection depends on the item.

ItemWho learns the look
Bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare dungeon itemEligible looters receive the appearance when the item is looted.
Epic raid dropOnly the player the item binds to receives the appearance on acquisition. Raids unlock 9 Dec 2026.
Poor or Common itemLooting grants its appearance without requiring binding.

A dash means the price is not announced. Powderfuse is a new Steamwheedle town. With transmog off, these are collection pieces only.

  • Barber chairs

Change body type and hair after creation. Seen in Stormwind and Dalaran so far. The cost is not announced.

  • HD and SD models

A separate choice at character creation. Classic animations are restored for HD models. It has nothing to do with the transmog opt-out.

  • Mounts window

Mounts live in their own window, so they no longer take bag space.
