How Protection plays
- Protection wants to be hit. Redoubt raises block chance by 30% after a critical strike against you, Shield Specialization returns 6% of your maximum Mana on a block, and Reckoning gives a 40% chance of an extra attack after one.
- Seal of Fury is the Seal the tree is written around: Improved Seal of Fury restores Mana when the Seal's shield is fully absorbed.
- Swift Judgement, the milestone, finishes Judgement's remaining cooldown and makes the next one cost no Mana.
- Holy Strike carries the threat: Iron Creed adds 25% to the threat it generates and, while Righteous Fury is active, makes it cut your damage taken by 10% for 6 sec.
- Holy Shield, the last talent, adds 20% block chance for 10 sec and deals Holy damage for each attack blocked.
What to press first
Most important first. Not a rotation.
- 1
Keep Righteous Fury active
Iron Creed only reduces your damage taken while it is, and Improved Righteous Fury later takes 6% off all damage on the same condition.
- 2
Fight with Seal of Fury
Improved Seal of Fury restores Mana each time the Seal's shield is fully absorbed.
- 3
Use Holy Strike whenever it is ready
Iron Creed puts more threat on every Holy Strike.
- 4
Use Swift Judgement for an extra Judgement
Swift Judgement finishes Judgement's cooldown on the spot.
- 5
Keep Holy Shield up while enemies are hitting you
Holy Shield has 4 charges, and each block expends one.
- 6
Keep Templar's Bulwark for an emergency
Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 sec, then leaves Forbearance on you for 1 min.

Gear to look for
What the talents reward on items, and items that carry it.
- A shield: Redoubt, Shield Specialization, Reckoning and Holy Shield all work through blocks.
- A one-handed weapon: One-Handed Weapon Specialization adds 9% to its damage.
- Stamina and armor from items. Sacred Duty raises total Stamina by 4%, and Toughness raises armor value from items by 10% at five points.

Groups and dungeons
In a group: tanking. New group talents before 5 dungeons.
In a group these talents support tanking.
- The threat talents are Iron Creed, 25% more from Holy Strike, and Holy Shield, whose damage causes 20% additional threat.
- Templar's Bulwark is the emergency button, and Sacred Duty takes 60 sec off its cooldown.
- Improved Righteous Fury, late in this order, reduces all damage taken by 6% while Righteous Fury is active.
New group talents by the time each dungeon opens
Strengths and trade-offs
2 strengths, 2 trade-offs.
Strengths
- Mana that comes back as you are attacked, from blocks and from Seal of Fury.
- It gets better with more enemies on you, in our view: blocks feed Shield Specialization, Reckoning and Holy Shield alike.
Trade-offs
- Most of the damage is reactive. Reckoning and Holy Shield both need an enemy to attack you, so one enemy that hits slowly makes for a slow fight.
- One-Handed Weapon Specialization is the only talent in the tree that raises your own weapon damage.
