How Shadow plays
- Shadow levels on a rhythm of kill, regenerate, kill. Spirit Tap gives a 100% bonus to your Spirit for 15 sec after every non-trivial kill, and lets Mana regenerate at 50% of the normal rate while casting for as long as it lasts.
- The damage is Shadow Word: Pain, which lasts 6 sec longer with Improved Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast on a shorter cooldown, and Mind Flay, which deals its damage over 3 sec and slows the target by 50%.
- A wand finishes enemies off: the build takes Wand Specialization from Discipline at levels 15 and 16.
- Vampiric Embrace heals all party members for 20% of the Shadow spell damage you deal for 30 sec.
- Shadowform, which this build reaches at level 42, adds 10% Shadow damage, takes 50% off the Mana cost of Shadow spells and 15% off the Physical damage you take. In it you may not cast healing spells.
What to press first
Most important first. Not a rotation.
- 1
Keep Shadow Word: Pain on the target
Improved Shadow Word: Pain makes it last 6 sec longer.
- 2
Use Mind Blast whenever it is ready
Improved Mind Blast shortens its cooldown.
- 3
Fill with Mind Flay
Mind Flay slows the target while it deals damage, and each Shadow damage spell adds to Shadow Weaving.
- 4
Finish with the wand
Wand Specialization adds 26% to wand damage.
- 5
Move to the next enemy while Spirit Tap is running
Spirit Tap lasts 15 sec after a kill, and that is when your Mana comes back.
- 6
Put Vampiric Embrace on before a long fight
Vampiric Embrace heals the party from your Shadow spell damage for 30 sec.
Talents that change how you play · 9
From Spirit Tap at level 10 to Devouring Contagion at 43.
The level is when our build first takes the talent.
- Levels 10–14
Every kill is followed by a burst of Mana regeneration.
- Levels 15–16
Wand SpecializationDiscipline
Two points outside the tree, for the wand.
- Level 22
Damage and a slow in one spell.
- Level 27
Vampiric Embrace16-point milestone
Your Shadow damage starts healing the party, and Vampiric Embrace gives Spirit Tap another way to trigger.
- Levels 28–30
Each Shadow damage spell raises the next, stacking up to 5 times, so longer fights get stronger as they go.
- Levels 31–32
A trade: Mind Flay deals 20% more damage from 10 yards further away, but its slow is weaker.
- Levels 37–41
A flat 10% more Shadow damage at five points.
- Level 42
From here, healing spells mean leaving the form.
- Levels 43–44
Devouring Plague costs 50% less Mana and spreads when its target dies.
Gear to look for
What the talents reward on items, and items that carry it.
- Spirit pays out after every kill, through Spirit Tap.
- A wand: the build goes out of its tree for Wand Specialization at level 15.
- Chance to hit with Shadow spells, which Shadow Focus adds 5% to.

Groups and dungeons
In a group: damage. New group talents before 2 dungeons.
In a group these talents support damage.
- Vampiric Embrace heals the party for a share of your Shadow spell damage.
- Shadow Affinity, 30% less threat from Shadow spells, is not in this build. In dungeons it is the first place we would move points to.
- In Shadowform you may not cast healing spells, so say so before a group counts on you for one.
New group talents by the time each dungeon opens
Strengths and trade-offs
2 strengths, 2 trade-offs.
Strengths
- Very little time spent drinking: Mana comes back after each kill.
- Mind Flay slows what it damages, which keeps enemies off you.
Trade-offs
- Spirit Tap needs kills. One long fight against a tough enemy gets nothing from it until the end.
- The two points in Wand Specialization push the Shadow milestone, Vampiric Embrace, back to level 27.
