Frost leveling buildSuggested tree

0/0/51 at level 60Ice Block at level 25

All 51 points in Frost. Frostbite and Improved Frost Nova freeze enemies in place, and Ice Lance at 20 and Shatter from 26 punish frozen targets. Cold Snap at 31 finishes your Frost cooldowns and Ice Barrier arrives at 40.

Open in the calculatorHow Frost plays Share

Key decisions

  • Frostbite comes before Ice Shards: a frozen enemy cannot reach you, and Shatter needs frozen targets to work.
  • Ice Lance at 20 also opens Fingers of Frost at 32.
  • Cold Snap at 31: Ice Barrier requires it.
  • Ice Shards fills levels 35 to 39 and brings the tree to the 30 points Ice Barrier needs.
  • Improved Blizzard near the end adds a slow to Blizzard for pulling groups.

Arcane leveling build

35/0/16 at level 60Missile Barrage at level 25

Arcane Missiles and Arcane Blast. Arcane Concentration gives a chance at a free damage spell from level 15, Arcane Blast arrives at 20 and Missile Barrage gives it a chance to make your next Arcane Missiles free and faster. Presence of Mind at 30 and Arcane Power at 40 are the cooldowns.

Key decisions

  • Arcane Concentration at 15 to 19: Arcane Meditation needs all 5 points in it.
  • Improved Channeling keeps Arcane Missiles from being interrupted by damage, which helps once enemies reach you.
  • Presence of Mind at 30: Arcane Power requires it.
  • Arcane Mind fills levels 31 to 35 and opens Arcane Instability.
  • The Frost points add Improved Frostbolt and Frostbite. Frostbolt can also trigger Missile Barrage.

Fire leveling build

0/39/12 at level 60Hot Streak at level 25

Fireball and critical strikes. Improved Fireball and Ignite come first, Pyroblast arrives at 20 and Hot Streak shortens it after critical strikes. Master of Elements refunds Mana on critical strikes from 26, and Combustion arrives at 40. In our view it has fewer ways to keep enemies off you than Frost.

Open in the calculatorHow Fire plays Share

Key decisions

  • Pyroblast at 20: Hot Streak requires it.
  • Burning Soul at 21 to 23 gives Fire spells a chance to keep their cast time when you are hit.
  • Critical Mass at 30 to 32: Combustion needs all 3 points.
  • Impact is the filler, one point at a time, for a chance to stun.
  • The Frost points buy Elemental Precision, which raises hit chance for Fire as well as Frost.

What changed for Mages · 6

Changes from Classic, and what the beta showed.
  • Any player can turn books in at their faction's library, and Mages who finish the turn-ins learn Research. It spends Light Feathers to make spell scrolls on a 1-hour cooldown. Beta

  • One beta Mage deciphered scrolls with a skill they call Comprehension, then combined Scroll of the Saber with Blade of Silverlaine to make Coldflame Saber. Beta

  • Taking damage while you channel Arcane Missiles fires a full-damage bolt in the beta. Blizzard lists it as a bug. Beta

  • Wands fire sooner after you stop moving. You still stand still to fire, for much less time than in Classic. Beta

  • Caster weapons now carry spell damage and healing.

  • A new spell rank may not replace the old one on your action bar. Check your bars after each trainer visit: the spellbook hides lower ranks until you choose show all ranks.

Dungeons and the 1-60 route · 9

Changes that apply to every class· 2
  • All 27 talent trees are meant to be viable for all content. They are not equal, and none should be strong enough to stack a raid with.

  • Hit and crit are one stat each for melee, ranged and spells. Hover a stat on the character sheet and it explains itself.
